These are the famous last lines taken from the poem, Under Ben Bulben written by William Butler Yeats, poet and playwright in 1939, they also served as his Epitaph.
W.B.Yeats is one of the most popular figures of twentieth century literature.
He was born in Dublin in 1865. His family moved to County Sligo shortly after his birth and throughout his life he carried out a love affair with County Sligo. He thought of this area as his spiritual home.
He used Sligo as the setting for many of his best works. The lake Isle of Innisfree and Under Ben Bulben are fine examples.
He drew great inspiration from sprirtualism,mysticism,Irish legends and folklore. these inspirations can be seem in the poem The Wanderings of Oisin.
Yeats was also a founder member of the famous Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1899.
He was awarded the Nobel prize for Literature in 1923.
Yeats died in Menton in the South of France in 1939 and was buried in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. In 1948 his body was taken back to Drumcliffe in County Sligo where he now lies under the shadow of Ben Bulben.
