County Mayo (Contae Mhaigh Eo the Irish spelling meaning plain of the yew trees) is the third largest county in Ireland.It is located in the province of Connaught in the west of Ireland. It is bordered to the south by Co.Galway and to the east by Co. Roscommon to the north by Co. Sligo and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.
The highest point in Mayo and Connaught is Mweelrea standing at 2670 ft.
It is famous for salmon fishing on the river Moy.
Achill lies off the west coast of Mayo and is Irelands largest island.
Mayo has a long list of notable native people such as Grace O Malley the pirate queen also known as Granuaile. Admiral William Brown the founder of the Argintine Navy. Mary Robinson the first female President of Ireland and later the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
