County Leitrim or Contae Liatroma in gaelic means "greyridge" probably eluding to the lofty limestone escarpments found throughout County Lietrim.
Leitrim is Irelands least populated county and has some of the most beautiful scenery in the country.
Situated on the western seaboard if Ireland in the province of Connaught it has only 5 km of coastline, running between County Donegal to the north and County Sligo to the south.
In ancient times Leitrim formed the western half of the kingdom of Breifni.
The O Rourke family of Dromahair ruled this region for a lenghty period of time and their heraldic lion takes pride of place on the top half of the county crest.
The lower part of this crest symbolises the lakes of Leitrim such as Lough Gill, Lough Melvin, Lough Allen and Lough Macnean
Carrick-on-Shannon is the county town in Leitrim and is a prosperous river port on the river Shannon. It is also linked to Lough Erne by the Erne-Shannon waterway.
This plaque is sculpted and coldcast in brass by Colm Mc Cann in studio.
It is then mounted onto a slate wall hanging plaque 125mm x 125mm in size.
This is an excellent gift for anyone who has Leitrim ancestry.
