Maze patterns date from the late Stone age in Europe.
This form of design can be traced to the origin of what we now know as Celtic design.
It was believed to be a primal language using pattern. The earliest patterns were based on the use of two straight lines in a "v" form. This then provided the symbol used to make chevrons and zig-zag patterns. This "V" shape is also thought to represent the Female Goddess.
The zig-zag patterns can still be seen on the early burial mounds in Ireland such as Lough Crew and Newgrange in County Meath.
The stone age artists used these straight line designs to speak to the viewer. They displayed a magical sense of motion when viewed.
The maze patterns in this clock have an almost hypnotic effect when viewed and might have been used as a tool or mandala by the early Druids to induce a meditative state in the viewer.
This clock is designed and handcast in studio by Colm Mc Cann to celebrate the art form of our early ancestors and keep alive the ageless tradition of Irish celtic design.
