County Roscommon is situated in the province of Connaught in the west of Ireland.
Roscommon is named after Saint Coman, who built a monastery there in the 5th century.
The woods near the monastery became known as Saint Comans wood or Ros Comain in Irish later anglicised to Roscommon.
Roscommon Castle was built in 1269 by the Normans.
